Some Things I Have Learned

This week marks our one year anniversary as vagabonds. Some days it seems like forever but on others it seems like we started just yesterday.

I am still trying to learn to pack the perfect efficient suitcase. You would think after a lifetime on the road (almost 100 countries) I would have it down by now. I am pretty good at it but think I can shave off another pound or two next time.

Efficient packing is just one of the things I have learned on this trip. Here are some other things:

Google Translate can be your best friend.

Just because the building has a sign that says it’s a bank doesn’t mean they will actually have any money there. Today is a Sunday and we have tried banks all over town trying to get a cash withdrawal and they all have no money available.

Speaking of money, I don’t bother to memorize the exact exchange rate. I round off to the nearest round number. The difference between 37 pesos to the dollar and 40 is negligible but it is easier to divide by a round number.

I really admire people who travel alone. Especially women. It takes a lot of time and work to negotiate travel and entertainment and if you are traveling alone you have to do it all yourself.

Don’t have expectations that things will work out. Always have a plan B.

To find good accommodations, particularly condo rentals, you have to be able to read between the lines. And don’t be afraid to email with questions.

If traveling on a frequent flyer award business class travel is worth it on overnight international flights.

When asking other travelers for suggestions pick people of similar ages, interests and economic circumstances. The simple fact that they have visited the same place is not enough.

The free walking tours in foreign cities can be rather terrific. And they are usually located in parts of town of great interest to travelers. For that reason that part of town might be where you want to stay. Figuring the right part of town to stay can be tricky.

Just because they say you can drink the water doesn’t mean you should always drink the water.
